Sheet Metal Workers

Sheet Metal Workers Local 20 represents workers throughout Indiana, plus parts of Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan. Seven local offices serve members where they work. Five of the local offices also have apprentice training facilities.

Job description

What a Sheet Metal Worker Does: Sheet Metal Workers make, install and maintain airconditioning, heating, ventilation, and pollution control duct systems; roofs; siding; rain gutters and downspouts; sky lights; kitchen equipment; outdoor signs; and many other building parts and products made from metal sheets. They may also work on fiberglass and plastic materials. Although some workers specialize in fabrication, installation, maintenance, most do all three jobs. Sheet Metal workers usually fabricate their products at a shop away from the construction site. They first study blueprints to determine the kind and quality of materials they will need. Then they measure, cut, bend, shape, and fasten shapes of sheetmetal to make duct work, countertops, and other custom projects. In most shops, sheetmetal workers use computerized metalworking equipment. This enables them to experiment with different layouts and to select the one that results with the least waste material. They cut or form the parts with the computer controlled saws, shears and presses. In some shops, workers cut parts with computer controlled lasers.

Working Conditions: Sheet Metal Workers usually work a 40 hour work week. Those who fabricate sheet-metal products work in shops that are well lighted and well ventilated. They stand for long periods and may have to lift heavy materials and finished pieces. Sheet Metal Workers must follow safety practices because working around forming machines can be dangerous. They may be subject to cuts from sharp metals, burns from soldering and welding, and falls from ladders and scaffolds. They often wear safety glasses and must not wear jewelry or loose fitting clothing that could easily get caught in the machine. Those doing the installation work do considerable bending, lifting, standing, climbing, and squatting sometimes in close quarters or akward positions. Although installing duct systems and kitchen equipment is done indoors, the installation of siding, roofs, and gutters involves much outdoor work, requiring Sheet Metal Workers to work in all kinds of weather.
