Electricians

Electricians are represented in the Indiana area by various local unions located throughout that state. All local unions are represented nationally by the (IBEW) International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Nationwide the (IBEW) represents more than 800,000 members working in the electrical and communications industry.

Job description

What an Electrician Does: Electricians install and maintain various types of electrical systems found in residential, commercial and industrial facilities. An Electrician must be able to read blueprints and follow electrical codes for a proper installation of conduit, wire, and electrical systems. The job can be physically demanding from lifting heavyloads, and climbing ladders.

Working Conditions: Conditions can vary from working outside in a ditch in inclemant weather to extrmely clean indoor settings. Electricians risk injuries from electrical shock, falls, and cuts. They must follow strict safety rules. Some jobs require traveling a great distance.

General Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older, a copy of high school transcript, high school diploma or GED, submit original birth certificate, copy of DD214 for Military applicants, and all applicants are required to pay a $25.00 application fee and be alcohol and drug free.

High School Recommended courses: 1 year minimum of High School Algebra or equivalent with a passing grade.

Length of Training: 5 year to complete Inside Wireman Program.

Do apprentices earn a two-year associates degree from Ivy-Tech? Yes!
