Job description

What a Boilermaker does: Boilermakers work in a variety of roles, including as boilermakers in construction, ship builders, blacksmiths and forgers. Their skills are used in construction, boiler manufacturing shops, iron and steel plants, petroleum refineries, chemical plants and shipyards.

Working Conditions: A Boilermaker works primarily in plants that are considered heavy industrial. Steel mills, power generation plants for utilities, chemical plants, refineries, and papermills are just a few of the industries that Boilermakers and their contractors service, These plants can also pose dangerous working conditions so safety training is constantly taught and reviewed by the union, the contractor, and the owner. This tripartite has proved successful in minimizing loss in accidents.

General Qualifications: 18 years of age or older. Minimum education = high scholl graduate or GED. Must pass drug screening test at an approved testing site. Must be of good physical condition to perform work required. Alcohol and drug free.

High School recommended courses: General Math, Geometry, Mechanical Drawing, Welding

Length of Training: 4 years

Members of Our Union
Any member of The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers may call himself or herself a Boilermaker, and many do even though they do not actually work in boiler construction and repair. Many also refer to themselves by some other trade our union represents through its many division. So you may hear our members refer to themselves as blacksmiths, forgers, ship builders, cement workers, stove workers, metal polishers, or numerous other job descriptions.

With its headquarters in Kansas City, Kansas, the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers unites 420 local lodges throughout North America, providing numerous services for local lodges and individual members and uniting all our members in our common endeavor to improve the lives and lifestyles of our members.
